The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of 5S initiatives as a facilitator of accruing business excellence in the manufacturing organizations.

The study involves empirical investigation of 92 manufacturing organizations to evaluate the contributions of 5S initiatives toward accruing business performance excellence in the respondent organizations. The study involves nine significant stimulants for 5S implementation and seven crucial performance parameters leading to realization of business excellence in manufacturing organizations.

The results clearly indicate close association between the significant nine stimulants for 5S implementation and seven crucial business excellence performance parameters. The study also establishes that 5S initiatives can significantly facilitate achievement of business excellence in the manufacturing organizations.

The study deploys various statistical and validation techniques to evaluate the contributions of effective 5S approach as a facilitator for accruing business excellence in manufacturing organizations.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative benefits accrued by an Indian automotive parts industry through strategic 5S implementation initiatives.

The study involves evaluation of steps involved in systematic implementation of 5S program methodology in an automotive manufacturing organization and investigation of achievements accrued by the industry through the successful implementation of 5S program.

Global competition in the manufacturing sector has provided necessary impetus for manufacturing organizations for affecting continuous improvements in manufacturing performance for achieving sustainability and profitability in the competitive market. 5S implementation is the fundamental tool for the overall achievements in both quantitative and qualitative performance enhancements in the manufacturing as well as service organizations.

This paper aims to focus on the application of multi-attribute decision-making methods (MADMs) to ascertain the optimal machining parameters while turning Ti-6Al-4V alloy under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) conditions using Jatropha-curcas oil (JCO) bio-based lubricant.

The experiments were designed and performed using Taguchi L27 design of experiments methodology. A total of 27 experiments were performed under MQL conditions using textured carbide cutting tools on which different MADMs like Analytic hierarchy process (AHP), Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and Simple additive weighting (SAW) were implemented in an empirical manner to extract optimize machining parameters for turning of Ti-6Al-4V alloy under set of constrained conditions.

The results evaluated through MADMs exhibit the optimized set of machining parameters (cutting speed V_c = 80 m/min, feed rate f = 0.05 mm/rev. and depth of cut a_p = 0.10 mm) for minimizing the average surface roughness (Ra), maximum flank wear (Vbmax), tangential cutting force (Fc) and cutting temperature (T). Further, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and traditional desirability function approach was applied and results of TOPSIS and SAW methods having optimal setting of parameters were compared as well as confirmation experiments were conducted to verify the results. A SEM analysis at lowest and highest cutting speeds was performed to investigate the tool wear patterns. At the highest speed, large cutting temperature generated, thereby resulted in chipping as well as notching and fracturing of the textured insert.

The research paper attempted in exploring the optimized machining parameters during turning of difficult-to-cut titanium alloy (Ti-6AL-4V) with textured carbide cutting tool under MQL environment through combined approach of MADMs techniques. Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been extensively used in important aerospace components like fuselage, hydraulic tubing, bulk head, wing spar, landing gear, as well as bio-medical applications.

SEM has been deployed to evaluate the original and modification indices of the model, which further establishes the improvement in SEM’s effectiveness. The model establishes the significant impact of 5S implementation on business excellence of manufacturing organizations.

The outcomes of the study will help the organizational managers, HR executives and practitioners from manufacturing organizations to know about the significant factors which should be followed holistically to achieve overall organizational business excellence through strategic 5S initiatives.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the capabilities of 5S program to meliorate the different competitive dimensions of manufacturing organizations and extracts the various significant factors which influence its successful implementation.

The research study has been accomplished in the large number of manufacturing organizations that have successfully imbibed the 5S technique or are in the process of implementing 5S initiatives alone or along with other lean manufacturing practices. The limitation of the study is that it encompasses only the manufacturing organizations, while a similar study can also be conducted in services sector also.

The study highlights the detailed contributions of 5S principles in the development of manufacturing organizations and its impact on the enhancement of business performance for remaining competitive in global market world.
